Consideration and friendship for contestants, even in the tension of arena action, made this stock contractor one of the most respected persons in rodeo. Certainly, Andy could identify with the contestants. He had been one himself. Ranch raised, he became a skilled saddle bronc rider in his teens and went on to win world championships – for steer roping in 1931, and for team roping in 1934. He began stock contracting in 1933 when he and Clarence “Fat” Jones co-produced a rodeo in Santa Ana, California. His famous string of bucking stock included Cheyenne, a pinto gelding that took virtually every bareback rider who qualified on him to pay window. His bulls, the like of High Chaparral, Blue Bell Wrangler and Old No. 28, were welcome in every arena, too. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979.
